DIAMONDS IN THE SKY

There is no moon
Desert night has no horizon
Black wind is my only prayer
I cannot see the ground I stand on

Just this rushing in my ears
Deep pumping of my blood
Only me and the black night wind
And all my senses in full flood

Only the desert sand beneath my feet
This thing that I call ‘I’
Overhead all the way to forever
A host of diamonds in the sky

There is no moon
Desert night has no horizon
The earth, the air, the wind is full of black
I cannot see the ground I stand on

Only desert sand beneath my feet
This thing that I call ‘I’
Overhead all the way to forever
A host of diamonds in the sky

It is likely that most people will never experience true night: night without artificial light of any kind: night without a moon. In most corners of South Africa the lights of a distant town glow in the night sky. It was extraordinary to walk out into a moonless desert night and see nothing: nothing but darkness.
And then to look up and find, just above my head, so clear and clean and bright - stars.
